Dorothea Tanning
- American painter, sculptor, illustrator, stage designer and writer, Tanning was born in New York (1910) and studied at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago. She became fascinated with the surrealist movement and soon joined a group of WWII surrealist exiles from France. She was married to Max Ernst until his death. Dorothea Tanning became during her life time a major influence to the surrealist movements.
- Dorothea Tanning only had one painting exhibited at the Biennale, a self portrait of her gazing down into some unknown valley bellow. The painting in me evokes feelings of loneliness yet at the same time courage when faced against an abyss. I could only speculate were this surreal valley is meant to be, or maybe it is simple some existential doorway where the old and sick go just before they die. A very emotional piece done by a great artist.
