Norbert Ghisoland

  • Belgium artist Norbert Ghisoland born 1878 in a coal mining community, his father ensured that his son would not succumb to the same harsh life and helped in all that he could to provide Norbert with all the tools necessary to fulfill a life as a photographer. Eventually Ghisoland set up his studio with his large dark room camera, the studio having a glass roof washing his subjects (over 90,000) in natural light.
  • I'm not if it is the method of photography used or simply Norbert's style of work but none of the photographs presented had subjects smiling. This gave a sort of creepy feel to his photos but still a feeling of sincerity and kindness between artist and model. Based on my recent research on Ghisoland I think it was likely he was another one of Gioni's Archetypal introverted artists.
