Marino Auriti

  • Marino Auriti (1891-1980), an Italian immigrant to the United States is most widly known for the creation of Il Enciclopedico Palazzo del Mondo. This Palazzo is a scale model built and designed by Auriti. He wanted a palace that would rule in the kingdom of knowledge and discovery. A place where one could unravel everything, to the last detail that man has achieved throughout our existence. A noble cause no doubt but one that never came to be. Maybe we simply aren’t ready for such an enlightened feat, or possibly such an expression is not needed for we have so much more to discover. After all is it even possible for our entire existence to be confined in one place?
  • Upon entering the Arsenale (one of the two main exhibitions of the biennale) you are first greeted with the eleven foot tall model building Il Enciclopedico Palazzo del Mondo. To say the least the model was very intricate, every window, column, tree and walk way represented in a high level of detail. I think that this installation set the theme of this years biennale very well, not only in the purpose the building was meant to fill but Marino Auriti himself being the archetype artist by which many personality traits were shared by other artists represented at this years biennale. Very good curating on the part of Massimiliano Gioni.
