List

Herbert List

  • Born in Germany on October 7, 1903, Herbert List was an artistic photographer of both candid images capturing life’s moments – some just outside his apartment window – and posed, black-and-white compositions. His most common themes were male nudes and erotic street shots.
  • If ever there were a photographer who understood both form and function it most surely would have been  Herbert List. His images at the biennale show an almost immortal form bound to mortality only by sting of protruding flesh and bone, as if to exclaim "my art lives and is not solely an illusion, look and see for yourself! -slash-" The haunting wax figures with closed eyes show vulnerability and emotion. Posing as if alive yet dead.
